Here is a short 6:35 minute video created by Juana's colleague Raul Leckie, NTC. This educational video describes the importance of the proper amount of stomach acid and the misinformation about Antacids, PPI's, Acid Reflux and Heartburn.
The latest information indicates how true the statement...
"The Seat of Health is in Your Gut", is.
Seventy to eighty percent of our immunity is located in our Digestive System. Isn't that just amazing! You may ask, How? Let me explain...
Healthy Digestion Starts with a Healthy Diet (I will go into Diet later...)
As the short video above indicated, digestion is a north to south process. It actually starts in our brain. Just the thought, sight and/or smell of food starts the digestive process by triggering the salivary glands to produce saliva. The mouth also provides the mechanical mechanism of breaking down food- the teeth and chewing. Chewing your food is an important first step to digestion. It not only breaks the food down into very small pieces, moistens the food to make swallowing easier, but it also mixes in the saliva which contains enzymes that start the process of digestion especially for carbohydrates.
The brain also sends messages to the stomach letting it know food is on its way. The stomach prepares to receive the bolus (the chewed up mouthful of food) by secreting hydrochloric acid (HCL), pepsinogen/pepsin (an enzyme) and mucous (protects the stomach lining). HCL plays a role in disinfecting the stomach and killing unwelcome invaders in the stomach. The proper secretion of HCL (between a pH of 1.5-3.0) is our first line of defense against invaders such as parasites, bacteria and viruses. HCL, along with pepsinogen, starts the digestion of proteins breaking them down into amino acids. The stomach churns this all up into a paste that is called Chyme which is highly acidic, and therefore, ready to enter the duodenum (upper most part of the small intestine) of the small intestine.
The 3 primary organs of digestion are: the Stomach, the Gall Bladder and the Pancreas. The Chyme enters the duodenum at a pH level between 1.5-3.0 (that would burn a hole in your carpet!) This low pH level is critical to trigger the release of mucous and two hormones that tell the Gall Bladder to release its Bile and the Pancreas to release its Sodium Bicarbonate and Pancreatic Juice. Bile is necessary to emulsify and absorb fats. Sodium Bicarbonate brings the pH of the Chyme to neutral a pH 7. Once the Chyme is neutral the rest of the Pancreatic Juices can complete the breakdown of the carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
The Chyme at this point is mostly composed of digested nutrients: amino acids, polypeptides (from proteins), glycerol, fatty acids (from fats) and glucose (from carbohydrates). Peristalsis then moves the Chyme along to the Jejunum, the part of the small intestine that is responsible primarily for the absorption of nutrients into the blood stream and lymphatic system. Millions of villi and microvilli take care of the job.
The Chyme that is leftover after absorption has taken place then leaves the small intestine and proceeds into the large intestine. At this point it is largely composed of indigestible fiber, water, bile and sloughed off cells. The large intestine recycles water, some of the "waste" to nourish the colon cells and captures any of the remaining nutrients and converts them into vitamins K/B1/B2/B12 and butyric acid. The remainder is then excreted as feces in a timely manner. All is good!
What is Digestion Dysfunction?
Digestion Dysfunction is when ANY of the processes described above get thrown off by a variety ways: not chewing your food, eating while stressed, eating food that is not prepared properly, eating food you are allergic to, nutrient deficiencies, natural aging process, GMO's, eating foods that are not nutritious, not eating enough of the right foods, etc.
There has been a lot of confusion about what is GOOD TO EAT. I believe most of us have tried to adhere to a way of eating that we have been led to believe is good for us. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of meddling of the Truth on the part of Food Giants and their lust for profits. If you would like to know more about this please watch "The Oiling of America" by Mary Enig presented by Sally Fallon-Morell.
